Concerts 1973 - to dateDuring lockdown we made two recordings as a way of keeping in touch with each other. Both are available on YouTube - we hope you enjoy them:
Wagner - Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg Overture
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3
Peter Bradley-Fulgoni - piano
Sinfonia of Leeds, conductor: David Greed
I have long admired Peter Bradley-Fulgoni's pianism and this CD more than confirmed his musicianship and technical confidence in one of the repertoire's most formidable challenges.
Indeed, there is more to this CD than just another Rachmaninov Third Concerto. The Sinfonia of Leeds is new to me but is without doubt a significant orchestra and gives first-rate support to Fulgoni's highly individual performance.
Denby Richards, Editor of Musical Opinion
Bartok and Lutoslawski Piano Concertos
Sir Ernest Hall - piano
Sinfonia of Leeds, conductor: David Greed
The best non-professionals can convey a quite exceptional sense of passion, excitement and love for the music. This is something the players feel and which is sometimes absent from professional performances. Nothing better illustrates what I mean than the playing of the Sinfonia in these recordings.
Sir Ernest Hall OBE DL
In 2005 Sinfonia inaugurated a Composer's Competition which ran every other year until 2009. The competition, which had no cash prize, was held during the summer and was open to any composer living within the county whose submitted entry had not been previously published or performed. Works were to be up to 10 minutes long.
Winners of the competitions were:
Karen Gourlay and Ben Oliver (2005)
Philip Steel and Paul Ayres (2007)
Paul Ayres (2009)
Here is a recording of The Giggleswick Cat by Karen Gourlay, which was one of the winners the first competition in February 2005. Thanks to Karen for the recording and permission to use it.
