David Greed writes: It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our 2017-18 concert season.

We welcome as soloists, Danny Driver, an internationally acclaimed pianist appearing all over the world from America and Hong Kong to Australia, who will play Brahms’ Second Concerto in our February concert, and my great colleague, from Opera North, Jessica Burroughs (cello section leader) to play Walton’s exotic concerto. For me this work is his best concerto for a stringed instrument.

The orchestra presents four great symphonies from the 19th and 20th centuries in the 2017/18 season of concerts. Beethoven’s 3rd symphony swept aside much that came before it and set the incredible standard of orchestral composition for those who followed. The orchestra will play two masterly compositions of the Russian culture – Tchaikovsky’s 5th and Shostakovich’s 9th symphonies. Written in 1915 Sibelius’ 5th symphony contains some of the most glorious orchestral writing one can imagine, with it’s extraordinary final sequence of dramatic chords. The same composer’s ‘Swan of Tuonela’ is presented in the same concert.

There is a Spanish, and Spanish-inspired, second half to the November concert, with works by Manuel de Falla and Debussy, and in April we will play a delightful suite of music from Janácek’s opera ‘The Cunning Little Vixen’ as created by the Australian conductor Sir Charles Mackerras. Other works by Dvorak, Mozart and Walton complete the season’s programming.

As well as our four regular concerts at St Edmund’s, we will be presenting a family concert at the King’s Hall Ilkley in July 2018.

Tony Kraus and I are met, constantly, with the challenge of devising programmes that are worthy of our great orchestra the Sinfonia of Leeds. We trust that we have succeeded and that you, our audience, will have a wonderful time listening to our music.
